Clock

Clock John at one time was known as Clockman and showed at The Gallery of the Eccentric in Coral Gables, Florida, lived in a house boat on the Miami River, and managed a 6000 sq.ft. warehouse for artists and writers and musicians. He also spent a year living in a 60x60 foot outdoor studio made with a combination of  tarps, plywood, and chain-linked fence for walls and a tin roof over head. He made child-like paintings on wood scraps and sometimes made them into clocks. These were some really productive years. Waking up in the morning to the open air really instills a sense of freedom.  This showed up in his art.  He uninhibitedly painted anything and everything that struck him- animals, people, monsters, and any other object that crossed his path or mind. More John's travels to Africa were also a great  influence on his art. He soaked up the sun and colors of the West African textiles while living in Togo for 2 1/2 years and he has visited many African countries since then. The brightly colored and florescent patterned cloth that the women wore, and some of the men, was a visual feast in the sparse landscape there.  These colors and patterns can be easily recognized in his work. Simple and functional, but elegant, he was also attracted to the earthenware pottery that he found in the markets. After returning from Africa he studied pottery at Indiana and Ohio State. Dog
